SHREWSBURY Town manager Micky Mellon thought that his side were good value for a point following their second-half performance against Swindon Town this afternoon.

The Shrews, who have won just twice this season, recovered from falling behind to John Goddard’s early goal to recover for a share of the spoils at home to Swindon on Saturday, with on-loan Newcastle United man Ivan Toney levelling matters just before half-time.

From there, Mellon’s men held firm to record their third 1-1 draw in a row.

“I thought we were a wee bit loose off the ball in the first half and never really got close enough to give ourselves a chance,” said the Shrewsbury boss.

“We wanted to pass it better than what we did.

“The second half; we came out a lot closer as a whole unit, moving across the pitch, and got closer to them, made it more difficult for them, but again, (I) felt that when we won it back, maybe because of what’s been going on, we were a wee bit anxious.

“I think we could have kept the ball a little bit better, rather than trying to score every time we win the ball back.

“In terms of fighting and getting closer in the second half, (I’m) happy with that but we must keep the ball better.

“And probably, if everybody’s honest, we end up with the best chance of the game in the second half, to maybe go and win the game, but it wasn’t to be.”

That opportunity was a late chance for substitute Ajay Leitch-Smith, who struck goalwards as his side broke on the counter-attack but was denied by Lawrence Vigouroux.

Mellon added: “Chances created; we would have to say that’s the best one of the game.

“Between the two 18-yard boxes, you’d have to say that Swindon had the lion’s share of possession but what really did they do with it? Let’s be honest about that.

“Did they really carve us open? Did they really create a lot of chances?

“We pressed much better in the second half and were a wee bit more aggressive in trying to get the ball back but we need to be better with the football, and when I watch it back again, that’s what I’ll probably see.”
