WHILE Swindon Town’s form has been indifferent of late, striker Nathan Delfouneso was always confident that his teammates would put somebody to the sword eventually.

That result came on Tuesday night as Town swept aside in-form Rochdale at the County Ground to end a run of four defeats at home in the league.

As many were exhaling with relief as Darnell Furlong netted the opener in the 24th minute to ease the tension, Delfouneso was ridding the monkey off his own back as he calmly finished under the body of Josh Lillis eight minutes later to record his first league goal for Town.

Skipper Nathan Thompson wrapped up the scoring with 10 minutes to go and Delfouneso had seen the rout coming.

“I’ve been saying it for a while, while results haven’t been great, I think there were performances that we put in where we think ‘you know what, we could have battered these’,” he told the local media.

“It was due and hopefully we can use (Tuesday night) as a confidence boost for everybody, from Lawrence (Vigouroux), all the way forward to me.

“It was certainly a very good 45 minutes in terms of work-rate, in terms of controlling the ball.

“Our decision making, in terms of whether we were going to go and break forward quickly or to go and control and sit on the ball and get the ball moving and waiting for that opportunity.

“I thought, that was very good (on Tuesday night) and something which we need to keep doing.

“It’s a tough league, every team that we come up against is going to be different but it is something that we know, if we are on top form and if we can match the sort of things we did (on Tuesday), which we still know we can improve on, we know that we will be a match and we don’t fear any team.”

Despite only finding the net once prior this season, during a 2-1 win over Chelsea development in the Checkatrade Trophy, the 25-year-old didn’t let the less than fruitful start to life in Wiltshire get to him.

“I have been making runs and runs and runs,” he added.

“It would have been easy to get frustrated but it was important that I continued to keep making the runs and I believe that given chances, I can put them away.

“It is great for me but the most important thing is that it helps contribute to us getting three points.”
