PURTON boss Justin Miller conceded that his side made harder work of it than was necessary in their 3-0 derby day win away at Shrivenham.

Joe Herbert put Purton in control at half-time of this Division One West showdown at Barrington Park but the visitors spurned plenty of chances before Shannon Pocock’s double finally put the game to bed after the break.

Miller was delighted in what was overall a very strong performance from Purton, although he admitted the missed opportunities made for some nervous moments.

“It was a good win, we played well. It just took a little bit longer than we’d like, we left it a little bit late to put the points to bed but overall it was a very good performance and a good three points too,” said Miller.

“We scored early on and then had quite a number of chances and hit the bar a couple of times before we got the second goal.

“At 1-0 the next goal was always going to be quite crucial as they were still in the game; we should have been out of sight by the time we actually did further in front.

“It was a bit worrying the longer it went on as it only takes one chance and they are level, so it was nice to get the second goal and once we got that, it was only ever going to finish one way.

“We pretty much controlled the game from the first minute to the last minute, they didn’t really threaten us too much throughout the 90 minutes.

“Like in any game, you get a few moments when you have a bit of pressure on you but we controlled it really well.

"Defensively, we were good, in midfield we controlled it and we were always dangerous going forwards, so it was pretty much the perfect performance.

“I couldn’t have asked for more from the lads; from one to 11, everyone was really good.”

New College were without a game this weekend, while in the Premier Division, Royal Wootton Bassett Town were stung by a late fightback as they went down 2-1 at Ardley United.

Steve Yeardley had given Rich Hunter’s side a 1-0 lead at the break but Bassett could not hold on as Ardley struck twice in the final five minutes to snatch the points.
