A TACTICAL masterclass from Haydon manager James Green saw them maintain their unbeaten record in Division Three with a 3-2 success over Crown.

With the clock ticking down and the scores locked at 2-2, Green made the bold move to introduce himself and club secretary Jordan King.

It was a ploy that paid off as Ryan Bragg delivered a ball in for King to find the back of the net and secure the three points to keep them top of the division.

“I brought myself on and secretary Jordan King, who is normally a defender, but I said we would go up front together,” said Green.

“With two minutes left, Ryan Bragg played the ball over the top and Jordan latched on and scored the winner.”

A Dan Kinglsey penalty and a strike from Ant Tomkins had put the hosts 2-1 up at the break, having conceded early, before Crown responded late on in the tie.

Having secured promotion last season as well as a cup final appearance in the Bunny Uzzell Memorial Shield in their first season as a club, Green sees no reason why they can’t emulate that again this term.

“It is only our second season, a bunch of friends put the team together because we are getting a bit older and we wanted to create a team before our legs were gone,” he explained.

“We’re now five points clear and We all want to get as high as we can before we all call it a day. Hopefully we can get promoted to Division Two.”

Elsewhere in Division Three, Eldene leap-frogged Stratton Saints into second place with a convincing 5-1 win, while AFC Cricklade sit third following their 3-2 success at Croft Junior.

In the only game in Division One, Deers Leap and Penhill United played out a 2-2 draw as they both missed out on the chance to close the gap on the leaders.
