JONNY May has returned to the England squad for this autumn’s international Tests at Twickenham after almost 10 months out of the game because of injury.

The Chiseldon-born winger has not played for his country since the disappointing World Cup campaign in 2015, which saw England fail to progress out of the group on home soil.

Australian Eddie Jones replaced Stuart Lancaster as England head coach following that below-par performance but injury prevented him from selecting May for either of his squads for the Six Nations in the spring or the summer tour to Australia.

The 26-year-old ruptured a knee ligament in a Premiership match against Harlequins last December, which ruled him out for the remainder of the 2015/16 season.

His recall to the Red Rose camp comes following injuries to Anthony Watson and Jack Nowell, who have established themselves as first-choice wingers this year.

May, who plays his club rugby for Gloucester in the Aviva Premiership, has 30 England caps to his name, scoring six tries.

The 33-man squad will fly to Portugal on Sunday for a week of specific training before returning to England’s base at Pennyhill Park to prepare for the opening game against South Africa at Twickenham on Saturday, November 12.

England also play host to Fiji, Argentina and Australia on consecutive weekends this winter, culminating in the match against the Wallabies on Saturday, December 3.

England head coach Jones said: “With a number of influential players missing through injury, we have two weeks to prepare a robust and resilient team to meet the challenges set for us in the Old Mutual Wealth Series.

“Our training camp in Portugal is a great opportunity to spend a week together, focus on putting our game plans in place and for new players to understand the England way.

“We’re looking forward to being back in front of a passionate Twickenham crowd and I’m confident we can prepare well and put together a matchday 23 which is full of pride, energy and commitment to give South Africa the game of their lives.”
