SWINDON ultra running star Nathan Montague ensured his year ended on a high with a superb run in the inaugural Mt Gaoligong Ultra race in China, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

The 34-year-old, from The Parks area of Swindon, finished third after completing the 104-miles event, which included 29,000 feet of climbing, in 21 hours 30 minutes, just 14 minutes behind the winners, who crossed the finish line together.

“This was one of the most amazing experiences of my ultra running career,” said Montague.

“It was the first time the race has been held and it had huge sponsorship from the state, so I got looked after so well. It was a real privilege to take part in the race and the organisation was phenomenal.”

Montague’s first big challenge was just to get there as the long journey included three flights over the course of almost 24 hours before arriving in the city of Tengchong in Yunnan Province.

Then for the race itself, the amount of climbing was equivalent to scaling Mt Everest and with plenty of downhill running as well, Montague admitted that his quad muscles were “smashed to bits” after the event.

“As for the race itself, I gave it absolutely everything and left nothing out there,” added Montague.

“I was delighted with my third place as the two guys in front of me recently finished first and second in the World 24-Hours Championships so are top performers.

“It was a really nice way to end my year because there have been some ups and downs along the way. It was a memorable experience and has left me feeling very positive about 2017 when I have some big events lined up.

“But first, it is time for a rest and let my body recover.”
