SWINDON Wildcats player-coach Aaron Nell admits there is still plenty for his side to work on despite claiming a 6-5 win over the Sheffield Steeldogs at the Link Centre.

The Wildcats did well to level the scoring after a slow start to their first home game in a fortnight as they were 3-1 down at the end of the second.

A hat-trick from Tomasz Malasinski, plus goals from Sam Bullas and Jonas Höög, were not enough to separate them from the visitors as it ended 5-5 in normal time.

Despite this, the Wildcats held their nerve as Jordan Kelsall bundled the puck into the net in the 61st minute to claim all of the points.

However even though his side were able to claim a win, Nell admits there is still plenty of work to do ahead of next weekend's game against Telford.

"We've got to perform better than we did in the first two periods, it was a get out of jail free card but we turned up in the third period and then Jordan (Kelsall) got the winner," said Nell.

"It was important to get a win, we had two really bad games last weekend and to come out like we did in the first two periods wasn't good.

"It's not really acceptable to play like that in the first two periods, especially at home when you only have one game at the weekend. It's not acceptable and it needs to improve."

Last weekend saw the Wildcats find the back of the net only once in their games away to Basingstoke Bison and Telford Tigers.

However, Polish international Malsinski took that responsibility on his shoulders on against Sheffield, something Nell was happy to see.

"Tomasz (Malasinski) really stepped up. It was good to score the goals but we have got to be better all over the ice," added Nell.

"At the end of the third, we gave up 49 shots. No disrespect to Sheffield but they are in eighth place and have lost five in a row.

"We are playing at home and to give up 49 shots isn't acceptable. Stevie (Lyle) was our best player tonight.

"He's our franchise player and the player we build the team around but when you have one game at the weekend he shouldn't have been our best player tonight."
