KELVIN Young called time on his seven-year boxing career on Saturday night.

The 29-year-old from Penhill suffered a fourth round stoppage loss against unbeaten light-heavyweight prospect Tommy Philbin at the Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley.

Young had hoped to squeeze in one more fight before his licence expires at the end of the year, however, the fourth round technical knockout has brought about an automatic 28-day suspension.

Young said on Facebook: “I felt great in the gym but just ain’t got it no more in the ring when it really matters! I am officially retired! Thanks to all! Enough love guys.

“I’m fine, bit upset rather than hurt, gonna be so tough to walk away from this game.”

During his career, Young helped bring championship boxing back to Swindon when winning the Southern Area super-middleweight title in March 2012 – the first championship bout in the town since February 2009 when Nathan Cleverly defended his Commonwealth light-heavyweight crown at the Oasis Leisure Centre.

Young then began to work his way up the rankings as he overcame Alexey Ribchev to claim the vacant IBO super-middleweight intercontinental title in December 2013.

‘Young Gun’ successfully defended his title against Francis Tchoffo in July 2014.

Following that win, Young then headed to the States in a bid to get the ball rolling for a potential IBO world title shot. However, those dreams were dashed in the November of that year when he was beaten by Kiril Psonko in a non-title contest which saw him stripped of his IBO belt.

A draw with Joe Walsh in February 2015 followed before Young defeated the Croydon man two months later.

Young made his television debut in January this year when he faced former footballer Leon McKenzie in an English super-middleweight title eliminator but he was blasted away in 43 seconds.

Young bounced back against Chris Hobbs before finishing his career with three defeats.
