SWINDON Robins have moved to assure supporters that the development of their new stadium is continuing to make steady progress.

Work officially began on the new venue, which is being built at the club’s existing Abbey Stadium home, last November when diggers moved onto the site in Blunsdon.

That put an end to speculation over whether the new facility, which will also house greyhound racing, would even be built, with the announcement that the Robins were to move home originally made back in March 2015.

The club held a farewell meeting at the end of that season with the intention of being in the new facility in time for the 2016 campaign, however, the project was subsequently hit by several delays.

Fears over the project were put to bed when work on the new venue began late last year, although fans have since contacted the Advertiser with fresh concerns, claiming that no substantial changes can yet be seen at the site.

However, builders have had to deal with a combination of the festive season and inclement weather given the time of year.

When contacted by the Advertiser, Robins CEO Mike Bowden moved to calm those worries and stated that the project remains on track.

“Work is absolutely going ahead as planned. People driving past may not notice much difference but if you were go up and have a look around, you would very clearly see that work is in progress,” said Bowden.

“If there is a change to the situation we will let people know. Our silence is because there is no change and there is no different news to report.

“We understand fans’ interest in what is going on. They are loyal, paying supporters of the club so have absolutely every right to want to know the latest situation.

“Things like this do take their time but we are pleased with the developments that have been made so far.”

The new SGB Premiership season gets under way on April 6, with the Robins expected to move into their new venue over the summer.
