LUKE Williams is adamant that attack will be the best form of defence if Swindon Town are to fire themselves out of relegation trouble.

Town face a crunch clash with fellow strugglers Oldham Athletic at the County Ground this afternoon and despite their current standing as League One’s third-lowest scorers, the Swindon head coach believes that his team must be relentless at the sharp end of the pitch.

A conservative cat-and-mouse approach will not suffice as far as Williams is concerned and the Town chief is urging his players to throw caution to the wind.

“Every single game is a must-win for us and if we go out with any other intentions, like that we will settle for a draw, it will be no good,” said Williams.

“When we went in front against Oxford (a 2-1 loss on February 5), the mentality was wrong, that we think that we can just defend onslaught after onslaught.

“It’s not the group to do it, unfortunately for them. That’s the reality and they’ve been told that they have to keep attacking teams over and over.

“It’s the best form of defence for this group. They have to play on the front foot, try to keep scoring, to out-score the opposition, to force them backwards by attacking them.

“We have to go into the game with that attitude and that mentality, and we have to score lots of goals to ensure that.”

Meanwhile, Jermaine Hylton is currently not being considered for selection against Oldham as Town ponder what disciplinary action to take against the striker following his midweek walk-out.

The 23-year-old, who has made 15 appearances for Swindon so far this season, promptly left Northampton Town’s Sixfields ground before kick-off after discovering that he hadn’t been included in Williams’ squad for the clash with the Cobblers on Tuesday night.

At present, Hylton isn’t set to feature against the Latics but Williams hasn’t completely ruled out that position changing before 3pm today.

Asked whether Hylton would be available, he said: “As things stand, no, but there’s time and things can change quite quickly, so we have to do what we think is right.

“We’re dealing with that in the football club and we will obviously know the direction that we’re going in once we’ve had a chance to assess things.”
