SWINDON Town head coach Luke Williams cut a frustrated figure after watching his side fail to capitalise on their dominance as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to fellow strugglers Oldham Athletic.

Town remain four points off of safety as they spurned a hat-full of first-half chances at the County Ground and despite a more lacklustre second-half display, there will still opportunities late on for Williams’ side to snatch the win and put pressure on their visitors.

Swindon looked solid at the back, a trait that has returned in recent weeks, but Williams knows that his side must be more potent in front of goal if they are to avoid the drop with 13 games remaining, but he is not laying the blame solely at the feet of his strike force.

“We, as a team, need to get the ball over the line and I always try to make this clear,” he said.

“It’s not about Jon Obika, Luke Norris, Nicky Ajose, it’s about every single player because somebody is supplying the pass, it needs to be slightly better, somebody making the final attempt can be slightly better.

“I think we created more chances today than we have done recently.

“I don’t think we gave away anything too glaringly obvious. Lawrence had a few bits to do that you would expect him to do but again we blanked and didn’t score.

“At half-time, we should be ahead and the danger is, if you’re not, the opposition are hanging on and they feel like it’s their day to not concede.

“I think, for us, you feel that hopefully you haven’t missed the boat.

“For a period at the beginning of the second half, it looked like that might have been the case but I felt like we came strong again.

“I thought Oldham were very clever, they tried to slow the game down but we managed to get some flow again and create more chances but still couldn’t score.”

On loan Rohan Ince was a standout performer at the base of Town’s midfield and Williams was heckled when he withdrew him from the game with 15 minutes still to play.

However, the Town head coach defended his decision and felt it was the right time to withdraw him as he looks at the bigger picture.

“I thought he was outstanding,” he added.

“I appreciate the fans giving me some stick when he came off because that is a compliment to Rohan.

“I felt like he was tired, he hasn’t trained fully with the court case.

“He started to look tired and I thought the booking was coming. When it did, I felt like there could be one clumsy challenge that leads to him being sent off and I don’t think we want to go into a game without him as an option.

“I can understand the frustration of the fans. I’m wrong if I don’t take him off and then he gets sent off and I’m wrong if I do take him off and everyone thought he was playing so well.”
