SWINDON Wildcats claimed an impressive 6-2 win over MK Lightning following a clinical performance at the Link Centre.

Robin Kovar, Michael Stratford, Jordan Kelsall and Tomasz Malasinski were all on target as they wrapped up their first win of weekend.

The home side got off to the perfect start when Kovar was able to wriggle his way through the Milton Keynes backline before slotting the puck past the netminder to give the Cats a lead in the opening two minutes.

Shortly afterwards the game was brought to a halt when a collision between Toms Rutkis and Adam Carr saw the latter need medical attention.

After clearing the blood off the ice, Rutkis was handed a match penalty for boarding. From that power-play it looked as if Swindon would be able to hold firm.

But with one second left the visitors found a way through as Blaz Emersic made the most of a sweeping move to apply the finish and restore parity for the start of the second period.

The second period was a much more frantic affair as it took MK just 15 seconds to take the lead when Lewis Cook gave his side the lead for the first time.

However they couldn't hold their advantage for long as Stratford grabbed a rare goal to put Swindon level once again in the 22nd minute.

From here the game settled into a good rhythm with the hosts coming under some pressure before Kelsall showed wonderful composure and ability to regain the lead in the 24th minute.

The final period saw the Cats hold a narrow lead and with MK piling the pressure on Stevie Lyle’s net, Aaron Nell’s side were desperately in need of a fourth goal.

They were given their chance midway through the period when Tom Carlon was given a two minute penalty for hooking.

From here the hosts looked unlikely to add to their lead, but with 46 seconds of the power-play left, Kovar proved lightning does strike twice when he hit a low drive into the corner of the net to make it 4-2 in the 48th minute.

Four then became five as Malasinski showed great composure to convert his one-on-one opportunity four minutes later.

The Wildcats were then able to put the game to bed when Malasinski added his second of the game when he wrapped his effort round the post with just over five minutes to play.
