SWINDON Town midfielder Ben Gladwin admits he and his teammates are well aware of the situation they are in as they welcome Gillingham to the County Ground tonight.

Despite picking up a 3-1 win away to Coventry City at the weekend, Town remain in the League One relegation zone and are three points from safety.

The Gills will also be boosted by their own weekend result as they picked up a 2-1 win over play-off hopefuls Southend United.

Luke Williams’ side are also due to face fellow strugglers Chesterfield and Port Vale in the coming weeks as Town look to haul themselves away from the drop zone.

Gladwin, who rejoined the club on loan from Championship side Queen’s Park Rangers in January, thinks the last few performances have shown there are things to be positive about ahead of this evening’s game.

“I think everybody is aware of the pressure, we know that we need to win games and pick up points. It’s not a horrible environment to go into every morning, everyone is quite confident,” said the 24-year-old.

“After the last two performances, there are a lot of positives to take from them and hopefully we go on and pick up some more points.

“We are a young group, so putting too much pressure on everybody isn’t going to help anyone. With the boys that we’ve got, we need to be able to relax as much as possible and go out there and express ourselves.

“We all know there is pressure every time you go out to perform, whether that is for yourself, or the club you are playing for.”

Since returning to the County Ground, Gladwin has been deployed in several positions but the midfielder thinks Town may have found a winning formula of late.

Williams has opted to play Gladwin wide on the left, while James Brophy occupies the other flank, with both players cutting inside on their stronger foot.

Gladwin insists he is more than happy to play in a variety of different positions if that is what is required of him by the team.

“I’ve played on the left quite a bit at QPR and the last time I was here, so it’s not something that I am too unfamiliar with and I don’t mind it,” he added.

“It was just about making the team a little bit more solid so we have two banks of four there.

“We can also break with more numbers, which is what we needed, and it has worked in the last few games.

“I think we have a bit more of a base to play from. We are a little bit more confident to start attacks and know we won’t get caught on the break.”
