TOWN head coach Luke Williams senses a selfless attitude amongst his squad and believes that quality can only benefit the Swindon cause.

Having returned to the County Ground in January, Nicky Ajose has been reinstalled as Town’s main attacking threat and he helped himself to the first two goals of his third spell with the club in Saturday’s 3-1 victory at Coventry City.

Williams believes that he has plenty of goalscorers across the width and breadth of the pitch but also takes heart from the desire shown by the Swindon players that understand the importance of allowing Ajose and his fellow strikers to fill their boots.

“The team are set up to give chances to Nicky and if you concentrate too much on Nicky, then Jon (Obika) is going to oblige as well,” said the Town chief.

“We have seen all campaign that we’ve got goals from the flanks.

“I think all of the wide players – wing-backs, full-backs or whatever you want to call them – have all scored.

“Darnell (Furlong) scored when he was here with us and pretty much all midfield players have chipped in with goals but to really be a good side, it’s very important that the front players score.

“Ben Gladwin made a comment that he would rather that the front two score than he score a hat-trick for himself, and it’s that type of team spirit, and that type of understanding of what’s more beneficial for the whole group, that’s really, really key.

“That’s so pleasing, as a manger or as a coach, when your players have got that mindset that they are selfless enough to understand that Nicky’s confidence goes through the roof if he scores.

“Other players will build their confidence by making good passes, by making good tackles, but those front players need to score and we saw last season that when the front players are hot, they can score goals whatever the circumstances.”
