ONLY three games took place in the Wiltshire League Premier Division this weekend with Wroughton, Marlborough Town and Devizes Town Reserves all collecting wins.

Wroughton further strengthened their position at the top of the table with a 4-1 home win over Ludgershall Sports, with goals from Shane Hibbert and Dennis Sorrenti, and two from Glenn Armstrong.

The victory keeps them at the summit, three points ahead of Marlborough Town, who have played four games more.

Wroughton assistant manager Paul Bowden was pleased with how Mark Love’s side made a fast start to the game as they collected their 17th win of the season.

“It was a very good result for us because on their day, they can beat anybody. They’re a good side,” he said.

“We scored a couple of early goals and knocked the stuffing out of them. Just recently, we have started games really well and been on the front foot.

“Now we are top of the league and we are there to be shot at, so teams are going that extra mile to beat us. It’s important we start well from the off really.”

Marlborough made sure they didn’t fall further behind as they too were able to record all three points as they won 3-1 away to Malmesbury Victoria Development thanks to Devan Bryan’s hat-trick.

The visitors took the lead in the first half with Bryan’s first before being pegged back to 1-1 in the second half.

However, from here, Marlborough further pushed home their superiority as Bryan completed his hat-trick to wrap up all three points.

“Within the first 20 minutes, we should have been at least 3-0 up and by half-time, it should have been 10-0,” said Marlborough manager Tom Thatcher.

“It was ridiculous. We had all of the possession and all the shots on goal. Our centre-forward had the ball hit his head and his knee before going over the bar.

“It was one of those games where you shoot and you just couldn’t get the ball in the net.”

Bryan’s triple takes his tally to 35 so far this season and manager Thatcher has heaped praise on the in-form striker after clinching another win.

He added: “It’s brilliant to have someone like him in your team, someone with a big presence up front, who knows where the goal is.

“If he took all of his chances in that game, he would have had a hatful but he got his hat-trick and we got three point,s which is the main thing.”

Devizes ran out 3-0 winners over Trowbridge Town in the Senior Knockout Cup.
