OLD Town United came away with a thrilling victory at the weekend as they triumphed 7-4 away to Moredon in Division One of the Swindon & District League.

It was a less than conventional triumph for the away side as they were forced to start the game with nine players.

From here, Chris Wood’s outfit found themselves 4-0 down at half-time, but when the missing duo turned up after finishing work, they were able to score seven in the second half.

Alex Hammond, Anton Webb and Lee Hayward all struck twice while Jesse McGowan also chipped in with one as they turned the game around, much to the delight of Wood.

Boss Wood said: “In true Old Town style, we have to make hard work out of it but once the players turned up, we banged seven in during the second half.

“I was very angry, if I am honest. Obviously, these things can’t be helped but it is frustrating and you need to work around them.

“We are first in the league and we only have nine players turn up for a football match – it's pretty annoying."

Despite a 4-0 deficit at the halfway stage, Wood never had any doubt his team would be able to turn the game around.

“We obviously changed our formation and went more attacking than usual with 3-5-2, and the first goal came within a few minutes of the second half,” he added.

“At half-time, we knew, 11 on 11, we were the better side. I don’t think there was a single player who didn’t think we would get anything from that game.

“I didn’t expect it to come as easily as it did. It keeps us four points ahead at the top, which is crucial. The last thing we needed to do was drop points.”

Wood’s troops remain ahead of second-placed Sport 4 Pinehurst with a game in hand.

Pinehurst continue to keep the pressure up on the league leaders as they thumped New Town All Stars 8-0 away from home.

Lyneham ensured they kept pace with Lower Stratton with a 3-0 win over Stratton Juniors, while goals from Richard Clark, Steven Norris and Jack Doult earned Lower Stratton a 3-2 win at home to Core Construction.

Swindon AFC were able to claim their fifth point of the season as they recorded a 2-2 draw away to Haydon Wick.

Wroughton Reserves and Marlborough Reserves also had to make do with a solitary point as they played out a 1-1 draw.

In the Premier Division, Tawny Owl churned out their latest win with a comfortable 5-0 triumph over sixth-placed Ramsbury.

That was their 11th straight victory, which protects their perfect record this campaign as they sit in second, two points behind Deers Leap, who have played five games more.

League-leaders Leap ensured that Tawny didn’t gain any ground with their win as they came out as 3-1 home winners against Swindon Centurians, thanks to goals from Jason McGovern and Michael Chivers, who got two.

Elsewhere, Bassett Bulldogs were 2-1 winners away to Swindon Spitfires and Sportz Central were collected all three points in a 4-2 win over Spectrum.
