SWINDON Storm player-coach Abraham Day believes his troops have plenty to be positive about despite losing their opening two fixtures of the season.

On the opening day of the campaign Swindon were handed the tough task of facing Cornish Sharks away.

That game ended in a 31-0 win to the hosts, but Storm improved dramatically in their first home fixture despite losing 26-21 to Bristol Apache.

Rui Rosa weighed in with two touchdowns compared to Dan Thorne’s one while Adam Day completed the scoring by adding the extras to all three scores.

Day admits he saw plenty of things to feel good about despite them failing to register so far this term.

“There is definitely progression from us and the experience has definitely helped us move forward so far,” he said.

“The Cornwall game was a justified result because there were plenty of mistakes on our part but I wouldn’t say it was a fair result, I think it was justified.

“I don’t think anyone expected it to be as close between us and Bristol. I think people are wondering what Bristol did wrong but it is more of a case of what we did right.

“We definitely turned up to that game and we didn’t make many changes in terms of personnel. I just think the first game was a learning curve for us.”

Next time out sees Storm hit the road again as they head to Dorset to face the Jurassic Coast Raptors on May 7.

With a large proportion of their team being rookies, Day admits the players will need to adapt quickly if they are to enjoy a successful season.

“We have quite a heavy percentage of rookies this year - our team are predominantly made of them,” he said.

“It’s never a bad thing and judging from the result against Bristol it shows our progression, it is just going to take time for them to get used to it.

“There are a lot of differences between us from this year compared to last year not only with the rookies, the whole coaching staff has also changed too.”
