THERE is no chance of David Bellego thinking he has completed his SGB Premiership apprenticeship despite being the catalyst behind Swindon Robins’ first top-flight league win of the season 10 days ago.

Frenchman Bellego is currently enjoying his first season in British speedway’s top tier and has made a flying start to his Robins career, topping the team’s green sheet averages after the opening month of the campaign.

Bellego’s haul of 13+1 points at Somerset Rebels 10 days ago saw Alun Rossiter’s side break their league duck for the year in a 46-44 success, although the 23-year-old knows he still needs to make further improvements, as the Robins arrive at Poole Pirates this evening (6pm).

“It’s been going pretty good for me so far this year, I am happy,” said Bellego.

“I have got good engines and I trained hard in the winter and did a lot of work by myself. I have to keep working hard as there are no easy meetings so I will keep my head focussed.

“I am racing in Denmark and Poland as well this year and it’s good for me to see different countries and different racing.

“It is really tough racing over there but I can’t complain. I will keep working hard with everything I do and hopefully it will lead to something good.”

Bellego’s heroics against Somerset saw him win his final four races of a five-heat meeting, including leading home a dramatic maximum victory in the night’s finale as he and skipper Jason Doyle turned a 43-41 deficit at the Oak Tree Arena into a 46-44 success.

“I am really happy for the team, we deserved that. We have been battling hard since the start of the season,” said Bellego.

“Adam Ellis was back in top form with a new engine so we had a whole team again and we showed that we can win away.

“We know it is always tough there because their riders are pretty fast around that track. It is a hard track as you have to be on the edge or riding on the inside but it’s a good racing track.

“It was a good to have that run in heat 15 and it was the perfect finish. I was thinking about the team and I was really happy we got the 5-1 but personally, I was really happy to beat Doyley.

“He is one of the best riders in the world and when you can get in front of someone like that, it makes you feel pretty good.

“We are going to keep focussed now. We have got a long season ahead and we are going to try our best to show people they were wrong about us at the start of the season.”

Robins boss Alun Rossiter says his team will arrive at Wimborne Road confident after their victorious away outing last time out.

“We had a great win at Somerset last time out, and I can’t see why we can’t aim for the same again,’’ he said.

“We always know it’s going to be tough going down to Poole, at their home track, and we’ll need everyone firing. But we should be going there with a lot of confidence and we’ll be going there looking to win for sure.”
