INTERNATIONAL ultra-runner Nathan Montague is back on international duty this weekend as he represents England at the Anglo-Celtic Cup 100k road race in Hull.

The Swindon Harrier is hoping he has recovered from the demands of the Marathon de Sables last month when he finished a respectable but weary 18th over the 250k course through the desert.

That was an epic test of survival and while 100k is not a distance to be taken lightly Montague is optimistic of making a decent impression tomorrow.

“The big question will be how much I have recovered from the MdS event,” said Montague.

“I had one week completely off when I came back to Swindon and since then I have gradually been getting back into training and feeling sharper with every week.

“I feel healthy and fit so we will see how it goes on the day. But it couldn’t be more different type of event really to a stage race through the desert in which you had to carry all your kit, food and water.

“The Anglo Celtic Cup is held over an out and back loop measuring 25k and then repeated.”

It will be Montague’s fourth appearance in the England vest and the 34-year-old teacher from The Parks area of the town is relishing pulling on the national kit.

“I am ecstatic about being picked to run for England again,” added Montague.

“As far as I am concerned it is the pinnacle to be selected to represent your country. That is something you dream about when you start out competing.

“For me it is a fantastic feeling and we also have a strong England team so will be looking to win the team title.”

Last year Montague finished seventh in the event and following his Saharan adventure would be more than satisfied to repeat that achievement. Anything better would be a real plus.
