ROYAL Wootton Bassett girls U16s have completed a league and cup double after thrashing title rivals Westbury Amazons 5-1 to lift the Wiltshire County Girls League crown.

Bassett went into their final game of the season three points behind the Amazons, needing to win by three goals to take the title, due to the aggregate score of their previous league encounter.

After going a goal down, leading goalscorer Sophie Roberts and Georgia Brown both scored braces, while captain Gracie Bridger made sure it was a five star performance that earned the team the right to call themselves champions.

As a team they’ve enjoyed a phenomenal first season, narrowly missing out on the treble after defeat by the slenderest of margins to Westbury Youth in the Wiltshire County Cup Final.

Meanwhile, Bassett’s ladies team also capped off their most successful season when they defeated Almondsbury UWE 4-3 after extra time to lift the Gordon Perrett Memorial Cup.

Setting the tone for an attack filled showpiece, Hayley Huckin put Bassett ahead after only four minutes. However, against the run of play, Almondsbury got back on level terms midway through the first half.

Huckin again put Bassett in front on the stroke of half-time and she completed her hat-trick shortly after the restart to put Bassett in a commanding position.

However, a penalty and a last-minute strike saw Almondsbury force extra-time.

Huckin was on hand to restore Bassett’s advantage in the opening period of extra-time and sound defensive work meant that their third lead of the match was one they were not going to relinquish.

The cup win comes just two weeks after Bassett secured promotion to the South West Women’s League following their second place finish in the Gloucestershire Women’s League.
