JAMIE Cox is potentially three bouts away from fighting for a world title, according to his new promoter Eddie Hearn.

The Matchroom Boxing chief was pleased with how the Swindon southpaw performed on the undercard of Kell Brook’s IBF world welterweight crown defeat against American Errol Spence Jr at Sheffield’s Bramall Lane on Saturday night.

Cox, who took a unanimous points decision win over Lewis Taylor after the bout was stopped towards the end of the ninth round, became the new WBA Continental super-middleweight champion in his first fight since October.

While the plan is to deliver the unbeaten 30-year-old a world title shot next year, Hearn says Cox’s next outing will be for British title.

“One of the problems (has been Cox’s inactivity),” Hearn told the Advertiser.

“He will fight for the British title next, whether that will be (against champion) Rocky Fielding or whatever happens with that (I don’t know yet).

“We are going to keep him nice and busy. He is entertaining to watch and there is much more to come after that.

“I was hoping to get him out in July, but that is only five weeks away, that was quite a tough fight for him, he has marked up a bit, a couple of nicks, so it will probably now be September.

“I think I can get him a world title shot, the rest is up to him. If you look at how we guide our fighters we give them all opportunities, the rest is up to them and if they are good enough they go on and win.

“Three more fights, then we will fight for a world title.

“We will get September done first, then maybe out again in December, so it could be either the spring or summer of next year.”

Hearn would like to see the former Commonwealth Games gold medallist stick to boxing instead of looking for the one-punch finish.

“He (Cox) is actually a very good boxer. He has got this reputation as a big puncher and a knockout artist, but actually he doesn’t have to do it like that,” added Hearn.

“He was perhaps a bit nervous (against Taylor), a bit rusty, but ultimately he’s got a belt and got a good win on Sky (Sports) and it is onwards and upwards.”
