SWINDON are the early pacesetters in WEPL Wiltshire after their 95-run success over Great Bedwyn on Saturday.

The visitors to the County Ground won the toss and put Alex Kill’s side into bat, a decision that appeared a good one when Ben Smith dispatched Paul Paginton for just three, caught by Ashley Perry.

However, Swindon recovered well and were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over as opener Marc Williamson scored 25 off 28 balls and Jake Goodwin hit 42.

A fifth-wicket stand of 93 put the hosts in a commanding position as Liam Tucker (45) and Conor Taylor (62) took Swindon to 214-5.

Swindon’s tail continued to wag as Andrew Staff’s unbeaten 21 off just 13 balls saw them set the visitors a target of 277 for victory.

Great Bedwyn’s reply got off to a fine start, as Josh Quinn and Richard Bosson put on 63 runs before the latter was caught for 56 by Kill.

However, Bosson was the only batsman to put up a respectable score as fellow opener Quinn took 50 balls to post just 19 before being bowled by Conor Cleary, who finished with 3-34.

Tom Codling and Kill both chipped in with two wickets apiece as Swindon dismissed their opponents for 181 to keep a three-point lead over Trowbridge at the top.

Royal Wootton Bassett were also victorious at the weekend as they completed a four-wicket success over local rivals Marlborough.

Bassett restricted the visitors to just 142 as they skittled out Marlborough in just over 47 overs, with Akash Sharma the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-20 from his nine overs, which included three maidens.

The hosts took their time with knocking off the mediocre target, with opener Sam Lawro caught for a duck by Pater Day.

However, Jack Twine’s unbeaten 48 saw Bassett over the line to give them 18 points and move them up to sixth place in the table.

Purton remain with just one win to their name as they fell to a 96-run defeat at Marshfield.

Having won the toss, Aaron Lee put the hosts into bat but a knock of 64 from Jeremy Bond left the visitors needing 223 to win.

However, it never looked like being troubled as Purton were bowled out for 126 off less than 43 overs, with Sam Bull top scoring.
