MORE than 100 Swindon Town fans were left stranded without transport for their opening day fixture at Carlisle United this morning, when coaches from the Tap & Barrel pub were cancelled at the last minute.

The announcement on the venue’s Facebook page came just two hours before 120 fans were due to set off, at 6am, for their longest trip of the season – a nine-hour round trip of over 500 miles.

“I am really sorry to say but the coaches for Carlisle have been cancelled,” read the announcement. “All money will be returned from Monday, 6 August.”

“Anyone that has purchased a match ticket, I will replace for next away game they attend. I really am totally sorry. I am the only person to blame and I have totally screwed it up.”

Fans were understandably upset at the nature and timing of the cancellation.

“We all turned up for the coach this morning, and there was a silly little notice on the window saying that the coach was cancelled,” said Mark Humphreys, 59.

“It’s so shocking. It’s not the first time this has happened though: last season we went to Oxford, but the coach didn’t come back, so we had to get the train back.

Excited to see Town’s new signings, Mark had booked the journey as part of a group of four friends. The only last-minute alternative was a train before 7am, costing in the region of £100, so he was unable to travel.

He said: “I’ve got four or five friends who work at the hospital who have booked days off to go to the game at Carlisle today.”

Brian Griffiths, who was also due to travel on the Tap & Barrel’s coaches, explained that it wasn’t only Swindon-based fans who were affected by the cancellation.

“There were 22 seats sold, to be picked up at Stroud leaving at 06.30, with people travelling from different parts of the Cotswolds to get there for that time,” he said.

“I only found out as I was leaving the house.

“Quite a few organised private cars to get there and well done to them for doing so, but unfortunately I didn’t get a seat. I will certainly think twice about booking with the Tap & Barrel again.

“There was no credible reason given. I have my fingers crossed for a refund, but I am not holding my breath.”

One comment on Facebook said: “No explanation, just a lame post put up in the middle of the night. You've ruined a lot of people's day – it would help if you could explain the reasons why. Silence isn't the answer!”

Another commenter sought answers: “You could at least provide an explanation as to why they have been cancelled at such short notice?”

And another said: “It’s a disgrace letting people know just before departure time. Coaches don't just ‘get cancelled’ – smells a bit fishy to me… how to make friends Tap & Barrel.”

The coach arrangements from the Tap & Barrel have no association to STFC.
