NICK Morris admitted that the spectacle would have been spoilt if riders had been forced to race on a sodden Abbey Stadium track last night.

Swindon Robins’ meeting with Somerset Rebels was called off at the eleventh hour following a sudden downpour, which was forecast to miss the north east section of Swindon.

While the officials’ best attempts were made to get the meeting to go ahead, with the start initially being pushed back until 8pm, it was conceded that they were not going to be able to beat the elements.

That was a decision Morris agreed with, not just for his own safety but for the fans, who wouldn’t have enjoyed watching the procession that would have ensued.

“You get that sometimes with the weather, but we’ve had a pretty good run this year, we haven’t had that many rain offs,” he told the Advertiser.

“The forecast was looking alright but we had an hour of rain and there was no chance of being able to race on that.

“The track is sodden and you wouldn’t be able to see as a rider and the racing would be terrible as well.

“We’d just be riding around trying to stay on the bike.

“It’s a long season and there is no point taking risks when you don’t need to.”

Swindon will attempt to face off against Somerset this evening at the Oak Tree Arena, with the visitors looking to make it 12 wins on the bounce.

Despite last night’s call-off, Morris says he and his fellow riders are ready to race.

“All the boys have been riding a lot, so we are all pretty bike fit,” he added.

“We won down there last time, it wasn’t easy and it’s not going to be easy (tonight) either.

“Hopefully all the boys can do a good job and we can see what we can do.”

The Aussie has been busy of late, having got an extra ride in Sweden, joining Jason Doyle at Rospiggarna as a replacement for the injured Max Fricke.

Having not had a night away from racing all week, last night the exception, he believes that constant action will only be a benefit.

“Max Fricke got hurt unfortunately and I was able to get the call-up there, which was good,” said Morris, who scored four, paid five, on Tuesday night.

“The first meeting went pretty well. I only scored five points but I got excluded in a race, which I probably shouldn’t have been excluded from but that’s how it goes.”
