DELIGHTED Swindon Robins skipper Jason Doyle extended his World Championship lead to 22 points with just two rounds of the series remaining with another final appearance at the 10th meeting of the year in Stockholm last night.

Doyle’s third-placed and sizeable 18-point haul leaves him just 21 away from securing a first world title - and the moment of glory could even arrive at the penultimate race, the NICE Torun SGP of Poland on October 7.

Slovenian star Matej Zagar followed up his German SGP victory in Teterow on September 9 with victory in Stockholm, beating Bartosz Zmarzlik, Doyle and former Swindon ace Peter Kildemand in the final.

Aussie ace Doyle won four of his five heats at the Friends Arena, then gated superbly to win his semi final and book his spot in the final race.

There, the Swindon man made another good start to take the lead, but was overhauled by Zagar on the final bend of the opening lap before Zmarzlik got past him on the next lap, leaving him to finish third.

Despite missing out on victory on the night, the thrilled Robins rider said: “It’s not all about winning the final. I am very happy with the points I scored tonight.

"Who would have dreamt that I could get 18 points in a GP and extend my lead?

“To score that many points, I am over the moon. Hats off to the boys; they rode very well in the final. I am happy with my third place.”
