SWINDON Supermarine U14 J followed up their opening day of the season victory two weeks ago with a 5-0 win over Royal Wootton Bassett Town to progress to the next round of the North Wilts Youth League Cup.

The South Marston outfit had plenty of chances to win by a bigger margin, although the visitors from a lower division did put in a brave battle to try to keep the hosts at bay.

The first chance of the game fell to Rhys Ward but he could only fire straight at the visiting keeper. Top scorer Owen Spavins hit the post and shot wide before he finally put Marine 1-0 up.

Spavins grabbed his second soon afterwards when he superbly turned his marker to slot home. Harley-Shaun Platt saw his header hit the post and roll agonisingly across the goal before Josh Godwin was able to head powerfully into the net from a Matt Courtney cross as Marine took a 3-0 lead into the interval.

Supermarine were slow out of the blocks in the second period and chances were few and far between.

Just as in the first half, it was Ward who had the first opportunity to find the target in the second period as he went in one-on-one with the Bassett keeper, who made a good save.

Jack Cremin was able to grab Marine’s fourth goal with a fine finish from inside the area.

Spavins had chances to complete his hat-trick but it was Courtney who wrapped up the scoring with a long-range strike.
