NEW Swindon Town boss Phil Brown believes having a strong understanding with chairman Lee Power can help improve results on the pitch.

Brown took charge of his first training session on Tuesday morning after being confirmed as Town’s new manager on Monday night, following the departure of David Flitcroft on March 1.

Having met the backroom staff, the first team, members of the academy and reserves, Brown admitted he was ‘excited’ by the opportunity of guiding Town through their final 10 League Two fixtures.

But he warned there are still two key obstacles in front of him if he is to win the support of the fans – a performance and a win.

Brown said: “I’ve had a lot of connections with owners and chairmen before.

“I think it’s important. When you’re a manager sat in front of a press call, you don’t want to hide anything from the public.

“It’s a simple challenge that’s been put in front of me. I’ve got no transfer window so there are no problems where the comings and goings of players are concerned.

“It’s all about the experience of winning games of football – the tactical, technical, side of the division.

“There are lots of things to admire about what’s coming.

“But you only admire them when you’ve performed and won.”

The 58-year-old, who guided Hull City to the Premier League 10 years ago, watched Town’s reserve team defeat Bournemouth 3-2 in their latest Central League fixture on Tuesday.

With one eye on his first-team selection for Saturday’s away trip to Cambridge United, Brown instructed coach Alan McLoughlin to field all players that didn’t feature in Town’s 3-0 home defeat to Cheltenham Town a week ago.

While Ellis Iandolo was substituted with a hamstring worry during that game, Brown could welcome Chris Hussey back into the team for Saturday, while Timi Elsnik has trained all week.

Brown said: “We didn’t have (Keshi) Anderson, (Luke) Norris or (Marc) Richards playing. Yet there were still three goals in the side. That excited me, I must admit.

“It wasn’t a case of being a good performance because a new manager has come in. One minute into the game they were a goal behind.

“There’s resilience in the team. There’s a lot of belief. We’ve just got to get that belief out of them on Saturday.

“I was delighted with Tuesday. It got me entrenched in the club straight away having witnessed what I did.”
