NETMINDER Renny Marr says he feels at home between the pipes at the Link Centre as Swindon Wildcats bid to overcome Peterborough Phantoms in the NIHL South One play-off semi-finals this weekend.

The 20-year-old Scotsman arrived in Swindon during the summer, as they club searched for a replacement for veteran netminder Stevie Lyle.

In his previous two seasons, Marr had iced a total of 47 times prior to making the switch.

However, it has been quite the contrast in Wiltshire, as the former Fyfe Flyers man has made 31 appearances this term.

After a heroic display in both the Autumn Cup final success against Basingstoke and the play-off quarter-finals against Streatham last weekend, the Cats’ stopper says he has surpassed his own expectations this year.

“Obviously it it hard to come from barely playing in the last two years, to then play most of the games this year,” he said.

“It took me a couple of weeks to get settled in. I just felt that when we were winning, I was confident and I was playing the game I knew I could play.

“Hopefully, for the rest of the season I can keep it up and be consistent. That will give the Wildcats the best chance to win.

“When I joined, there was no guarantee that I would start because anything can happen.

“Aaron Nell (player-coach) just said to me during pre-season that we would see how it goes because I was splitting games with Matt Smital.

“Stevie Lyle is a Great Britain legend.

“He has done so many great things in his career, so when I first came in, I knew I had big boots to fill.

“Aaron said to me that I was young and that I didn’t need to live up to Lyle, so I felt at home.”

Peterborough travel to Wiltshire tomorrow evening, before the Cats make the trip east a day later and Marr says the best way for the Cats to progress is if they aim to take a lead into Sunday’s game.

“I think we just need to keep the game simple over the two matches,” he added.

“If we can play the way we did last weekend against Basingstoke, where we played smart, we have a good chance.

“We need to keep the intensity that we have had at the club over the last couple of weeks or so because this is the part of the season which is do or die.”
