BOXER Jamie Cox admits signing with Matchroom has opened his eyes to fighting on the world stage.

The 31-year-old was released by his previous promotional company, Queensberry Promotions, which is headed by Frank Warren, just under a year ago.

After becoming a free agent, Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing snapped up the Swindon southpaw two days later, which marked the start of a busy period for Cox.

Cox returned to the ring and had three bouts in the space of three months last summer, before being named as one of the super-middleweights to compete in the World Super Series.

That tournament then subsequently provided Cox with his first world title shot, as he came up against George Groves for the WBA strap at Wembley Arena last October.

The Swindon man lost that fight, but says it was a valuable experience for him as he praised his promotional company.

“Matchroom really are the number one outfit in the game. I think Eddie (Hearn) is looking to sew up the entire world,” said Cox. “He has Amir Kahn as well now. He’s a great businessman and he’s just signed Daniyar Yeleussinov, who is supposed to be the next Gennady Golovkin “Last year was a great experience. To be with Matchroom, to be the main event and see all the media and exposure.

“To be the main focus of that media was intense, but it can’t distract you from what you’re doing.

“Super Series is very different to what Eddie is doing. Eddie is doing all of the football stadiums and the platform is a little bit different.

“It’s very good. It’s like the Champions League and they fine-tuned the previous Super Six series.”

The 31-year-old returned to action for the first time since that defeat to Groves last month, where he claimed victory over Harry Matthews at the O2 Arena on the undercard of Dillian Whyte v Lucas Browne.

That fight was seen as a tune-up for Cox, who will face John Ryder in London on Matchroom’s David Haye v Tony Bellew II show on Saturday, May 5.
