DAVID Howell says simplicity is the key to his recent success as he looks to make his third consecutive European Tour cut at the Sicilian Open.

The 42-year-old, who has endured a torrid time with injuries and a lack of form over recent seasons due to back and foot problems, looks to be slowly making a return to form.

The two-time Ryder Cup winner heads to the Italian island on the back of a three-week break, with his last tournament ending in a tied 36th finish at the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco in mid-April.

As he prepares to get under way this morning, former Brome Manor member Howell says he is in a good frame of mind going into the tournament.

“I’m feeling good. I had a nice couple of days building up to the event where I played nicely, so everything is tickety-boo,” said Howell.

“During the break I did a bit of TV work. I took the first week off and had a bit of golf last week, so I’m really just ticking over.

“I feel rested, the body feels good and my form has been pretty good in practice, so we will see what the week brings.

“I’m feeling pretty positive at the moment. I think it is important for me to keep chugging along like I have been doing in the last few weeks.“If I can do something like my last few weeks, then I’ll get some positive momentum. It’s a case of doing things one step at a time, whether that is a small step or a giant one.

“My game is really coming together nicely and I am in a simple place with where my mind is. I have a simple swing thought and play simple shots.”

With the Verdura Golf Club course on the coast, Howell says the weather could have a say on who comes out on top this week.

“If it is windy, then the course will be a strong test,” he said.

“I’m out early in the morning so hopefully I can get a few birdies on the board early on. It would be nice to get a good score on day one.”

The Swindon star is set to tee off at 7.50am BST, alongside Frenchman Gregory Bourdy and Australian Marcus Fraser.
