A CHARITY walk has been organised by Swindon Robins commercial manager Lee Kilby to raise funds for Mitchell Davey, who was placed into intensive care following a crash at Birmingham last week.

Davey was one of four riders involved in a nasty crash during Brummies’ home National League Knockout Cup match against Mildenhall Fen Tigers.

Tigers’ Josh Bailey lost control of his machine before clashing with Callum Walker, Sam Bebee and Davey.

The Robins reserve was placed into intensive care upon arrival at hospital where it was confirmed he had punctured his lung, chipped several vertebrae, broke his shoulder blade and 12 ribs.

Reacting to the crash, Kilby – son of legendary Swindon racer Bob – decided to raise funds for the injured Aussie by walking 72 miles from Birmingham’s Perry Barr Stadium to Swindon’s Abbey Stadium overnight.

The walk will commence once Brummies’ home fixture against Stoke Potters on Wednesday concludes and will last until Kilby reaches the Abbey Stadium ahead of the Robins’ SGB Premiership meeting against Wolverhampton.

Kilby said: “Most of us have read the stories and heard the reports about what happened to Mitchell.

“It was a terrible accident at Birmingham and it left him in intensive care.

“He has talked to Lawrence Rodgers (Birmingham Brummies manager) which is terrific news, but he’s still in a pretty bad way and we envisage that he’s going to be off the bike for quite some time.

“We want to do something special for him. I’ve worked closely with Mitchell at Swindon and Birmingham, which has been nice.

“We’re going to do two collections, one at Birmingham on Wednesday evening and at Swindon too on Thursday.”

Kilby hopes his efforts can provide some respite for the Queensland-born racer, whose previous clubs include Glasgow, Berwick, Edinburgh, Redcar, Coventry and Stoke.

A collection will be held at the Abbey Stadium throughout Thursday night’s home meeting, while a JustGiving website in the process of being put online.

“It’s 72 miles, I imagine it will take me 18 to 20 hours and I’ll be doing it wearing a race suit,” said Kilby.

“That’s the plan, I want everybody to get involved and raise some money for one of the nicest guys in speedway.”
