SWINDON Robins were denied a consolation league point at Belle Vue tonight after teenager Dan Bewley came from the back to win heat 15 in dramatic style.

It was Robins’ second Premiership defeat of the season as the Aces, led by Bewley who returned with 11 points, defeated Alun Rossiter’s men 50-40.

Robins were forced into making one change to the side that defeated Poole Pirates at the Abbey Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday following Mitchell Davey’s crash at Birmingham.

Teenager Jack Smith made his debut after being revealed as Davey’s replacement on Sunday afternoon.

Robins made the best possible start when Adam Ellis and Nick Morris gated the home pairing of Craig Cook and Dan Bewley to earn a 5-1 in the first race of the night.

Aces recovered quickly to hit back with a 5-1 of their own in the following race as Polish reserve Damian Drozdz got the better of Robins’ Zach Wajtknecht down the back straight of lap two, making for a comfortable home maximum.

Mark Lemon’s men took the lead for the first time after heat three as Australian Rohan Tungate powered to victory ahead of Troy Batchelor and Bewley with David Bellego at the back.

Tobiasz Musielak provided Robins with their second heat win of the night when he squeezed between Max Fricke and Drozdz down the back straight of lap one in heat four.

Though Fricke gave chase, his efforts were in vain as Drozdz secured third ahead of Smith.

A 5-1 for the home side in heat five prompted Alun Rossiter to use his tactical substitute as Batchelor replaced Wajtknecht in heat six.

Though the move stopped Aces’ run of heat advantages, Grand Prix racer Cook gated Batchelor to win as Robins settled for a 3-3.

Batchelor responded to Robins’ shared race in heat six by teaming up with Bellego to record Swindon’s second 5-1 of the night in heat seven, reducing the deficit to two points.

Aces immediately hit back with a 5-1 of their own in heat eight to re-establish their six-point lead following Tungate’s last lap pass on Ellis.

Tungate experienced a role reversal in the following heat though when he was passed by Musielak down the back straight of the final lap.

Musielak’s final move came following several position changes between the pair, prompted the grandstand to rise to their feet after the race finished.

Robins secured their third 5-1 of the night before the interval when Batchelor and Bellego teamed up to beat Aces duo Cook and Fricke comfortably.

However hopes of returning to Blunsdon with league points were dashed in heat 11 when Ellis came to grief while Robins held a 3-3.

Teenage sensation Bewley made light work to round Troy Batchelor in heat 12 as Robins’ deficit remained at four points with Wajtknecht beating Drozdz for third.

More entertaining action was served up in heat 13 as Robins were forced to settle for two points after initially holding a 3-3.

Cook found a way past Musielak before Cook dived up the inside of Morris entering the final turn. Morris read Cook’s move though to cut back on bend four and retake second on the run to the line.

The Aces got the 5-1 they were seeking in the following heat though as Tungate went from last to second to joining Jye Etheridge up front.

The 5-1 meant Robins required a 5-1 of their own in the final heat to secure a consolation league point.

Despite holding a maximum during the first lap, star Aces racer Bewley shot to the front to earn the home side a 3-3 - leaving the Robins empty-handed.

Skipper Morris said: “The boys tried hard and I had a tough night personally. I always struggle for speed at Belle Vue, you’ve got to be on top of your set-up here.

“I’ll put my hands up and say I had a poor one. Hopefully we can improve on Wednesday (against Somerset), it will be another tough meeting. But we’ll approach it as we do with every other meeting.”
