A BOOSTER crowd assembled at the Abbey Stadium tonight to watch Swindon Robins demolish Somerset Rebels in the SGB Premiership.

All the pre-meeting chat was based on the return of Swindon asset, former skipper and world champion Jason Doyle to the Abbey Stadium, who was looking to end the Robins’ perfect record on home shale in 2018.

However, despite the threat of Doyle, Swindon made a ferocious start to proceedings as Nick Morris and Adam Ellis produced the perfect ride to thwart their former colleague in heat one.

Morris, who led from the outset, had no issue racing clear and recorded a lightning quick time of 64.40 as Swindon came away with the first of their seven 5-1 maximum victories on the night.

In the second heat, Zach Wajtknecht followed up the efforts of his captain as he took the heat win despite persistent pressure from Bradley Wilson-Dean for Somerset.

Jack Smith endured a tough start, as he finished way behind at the back as the Rebels tied the heat 3-3 at a sun-kissed Abbey.

Dynamic duo David Bellego and Tory Batchelor had Swindon fans short of breath in the third race as they rode side by side and almost took each other out.

Flying Frenchman Bellego asserted his dominance and Batchelor surrendered as Swindon sealed a second 5-1 win over the visitors to lead 13-5.

In the fourth, Tobiasz Musielak had a shaky start into the opening bend and as a result, the Polish rider lost some pace, which allowed Wilson-Dean to convert his lead into a heat win against his former employers with no major trouble.

In his second outing, Doyle, flew out of the gates and through for victory in heat five, forcing Batchelor and Bellego to settle for second and third as Swindon drew the heat 3-3.

A heat later, Ellis held his nerve well into turn one despite being crowded out coming off the line and emerged with the lead on the straight.

There was a late wobble for his partner Morris on the last lap, but the Aussie kept control of his bike and held on to second place to extend the overall lead to 23-13.

Youngster Wajtknecht impressed again as he pulled off a great move to pass Charles Wright for third in heat seven, while Musielak had no trouble out front to get the win.

Alun Rossiter opted for a change in the eighth instalment, swapping Smith out for Wajtknecht, and it turned out to be an inspired decision as the young Brit backed up heat winner Ellis superbly for a huge 5-1 win.

Swindon were really finding their rhythm and a heat later, it was a routine performance from their dream duo as Batchelor took the win, followed by Bellego in second. Former Robin Wilson-Dean had trouble with his bike and was forced to retire.

Skipper Morris looked very fast in winning heat 10, although Jack Holder held off Ellis, who was himself under pressure from Wright, but got the last of the points.

Heat 11 summed up Doyle’s night as he failed to get off the line with bike trouble, leaving the door open for Musielak and Wajtknecht to bag a 5-1.

A tactical change saw Doyle subbed in and win the 12th in a solid performance, while Batchelor swept home in second as Smith continued to struggle at the back of the field.

Things seemed to come to head in heat 13 with Morris, Musielak and Doyle all featuring, but after a stalled start, which saw Doyle warned for an unsatisfactory getaway, Swindon showed no signs of weakness.

Skipper Morris edged in front of Doyle, and as the heat continued, the Swindon man was able to increase his lead over the Somerset ace.

Fourteen heats deep, Bellego turned in a fabulous ride and romped home after getting himself in front early on.

Teenager Wajtknecht racked up two more points with a second-placed finish as Rossiter’s men continued their domination.

Swindon opted for Batchelor and Musielak in the final heat but they were turned over by Doyle and Holder, who managed to retain some blushes for the visiting side.

The Robins are back in action on Thursday at the Abbey Stadium, where they welcome Belle Vue Aces to Wiltshire.
