ROYAL Wootton Bassett’s faultless start to the WEPL Wiltshire campaign continued this weekend with a 67-run win over Corsham 2nd which lifted them to the top of the table.

Skipper Darren Beasant has seen his troops make a storming start to the season, with five wins out of five so far.

This week, Bassett were at home to Corsham, who won the toss and opted to put Beasant’s men in to bat first.

After dragging themselves to a total of 162-9, the Wootton Bassett chief admitted Mark Lazenby deserved a special mention as his four-wicket haul helped dispatch the visitors for 95.

“We were uncomfortable having to go in and bat first. The weather has been a bit horrible, so it was never going to be a day for the batters,” he said.

“Groundsmen all over the county have been working really hard. We knew that we would be put in to bat if we lost the toss and that is what happened.

“We had to fight really hard to get to 162, in those conditions we thought if we were disciplined with the ball then we would be okay.

“Mark (Lazenby) has been outstanding over the last few weeks. He played second team cricket for many years and in the last few months he’s improved out of sight.

“Credit to him, Mark’s bowling has come on leaps and bounds in the last 18 months and now he is a very skilful bowler.

“Akash Sharma struggled for what ever reason and we needed someone to step up and say they’d do it today, it was great to see someone who has worked so hard get the rewards.”

Elsewhere in WEPL Wiltshire, both Swindon and Purton were in action, although they were less fortunate than Bassett as they both suffered defeats.

Swindon have won just once this season, with Devizes the latest to inflict defeat on Alex Kill’s side after they collected their maiden win a week earlier.

Swindon lost the toss and were ordered to bat, which saw them removed for 179, before Devizes cruised to 190-6.

Purton also lost away from home, as they were beaten by Chippenham who dispatched Aaron Lee’s men for 149.

Callum Wright chipped in with 60 for the visitors.

Chippenham came close to falling short but just about secured a two-wicket win at 151-8.

In Prem Two Glos/Wilts. Lechlade were beaten by five wickets at Rockhampton, despite 48 from William Evans in their 157 all out
