SWINDON St George captain Connor Tomley says his side are the victims of their own downfall, blaming complacency as the reason behind last week’s defeat.

After making a winning start to the campaign, St George came unstuck against Somerset Vikings as they were handed their first defeat of the year.

Following that, Tomley says he hopes that gave his team a shot in the arm and reminded them that they are not guaranteed to win without putting the work in as they head to Melksham to face Bath today (2.30pm).

“Hopefully the defeat was a wake-up call. That is what I am hoping for because it showed that we can’t just turn up and win a game, we have to work,” he said.

“People need to be turning up to training, working hard on the pitch so that hard work and then we will see the results of that on the pitch.

“I think complacency is a problem. That is because we were so comfortable last year and I think people are just too confident and too comfortable.

“After the defeat I am hoping people will realise we need to work hard like we did last year.”

Bath were the first team to fall victim to St George on the opening day of the season when Ben Whincup’s outfit won away from home.

Now in the reverse fixture, Tomley, who is expected not to feature at the weekend due to a groin strain, says the club need to get back to winning ways at the first time of asking.

“Bath is a local rival for us and we have a few boys back from injury as well,” he said.

“Last time we played them we didn’t know what to expect, we know what are Bath are like so hopefully we turn up this week, destroy them and get our confidence back.

“I think that is what the boys need.

“We’ve been working on fitness and defence at during the week because last time they were just running through the middle of us.

“Hopefully the boys are riled up now, that is what I want to see."
