ROYAL Wootton Bassett captain Darren Beasant is looking forward to leading his troops out onto the field at home against Calne this weekend, despite a confidence denting loss at Swindon.

Beasant’s men saw their five-game winning streak in WEPL Wiltshire ended last time out, ensuring they lost top spot to unbeaten Warminster.

But missing out on a sixth straight win has granted Bassett a wake-up call, according to Beasant – who is targeting an immediate return to the top of the table.

He said: “We’re very keen to get on the field after last weekend.

“Forgetting the result, performance wise it was our worst of the year. We had opportunities to win, but we didn’t do ourselves justice and didn’t get the result.

“To get another win would help put that result behind us.

“Long term, losing a game of cricket might do us some good. It doesn’t hurt to have a bit of a wake-up call and remind yourselves of what you did to be successful for the five games before that.”

While Calne have endured a turbulent start to their 2018 campaign, Beasant admits tomorrow’s opponents have struggled to hit form all at once.

And he’s wary that it’s only a matter of time before Calne’s batsmen work together as one unit and feed from each other’s success.

“Calne can be a dangerous side,” said Beasant. “While they haven’t had a great set of results this year, one week soon more than one of their top guys will fire.

“If you bump into one of them on the wrong week, they can take the game away from you.

“We will have to be at our best and we should expect to be put under pressure at times, which we will have to respond well to.”

“Our target this year was to remain competitive and do ourselves justice.”

Elsewhere, Swindon and Purton are both on the road, at Corsham 2nd and Marlborough respectively.

In Premier Two Glos/Wilts, Lechlade travel to Trowbridge.
