LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT Sam Smith says he is ready to put his practice into action as he prepares to take on Istvan Orsos in Bracknell.

The 25-year-old, who is trained by Swindon’s Paddy Fitzpatrick says he has been working on the technical side of his boxing of late and is looking forward to demonstrating the changes he has made.

Orsos presents another challenge for Smith as the 36-year-old is also the first southpaw the Swindon man has come up against since becoming a professional.

All that aside, Smith is looking forward to getting back in the ring on Sunday evening at Bracknell Leisure Centre.

“We’ve worked out that I had my head over my front foot and now in sparring I have a lot more power,” he said.

“When I was on the inside I wasn’t comfortable but now I am so I’m looking forward to putting it into practice on Sunday.

“I think that will benefit me massively because no matter how rangy you are, you always end up boxing on the inside.

“When you’re there you can’t just tie up. I used to stand there and try to fight but I wasn’t doing it effectively like I am now.

“I’ve been sparring other southpaws too which has been good. I think the main thing is not to over think about it.

“We are looking to shape that inside work and then let the other stuff come along.”

With a defeat to Kirk Garvey the only blemish on Smith’s record as a professional, the 25-year-old says he would welcome a rematch with Garvey for the Southern Area title.

“I’d be up for Garvey again. In that fight I was ahead on the scorecards and I think it was more of an experience thing,”

“I managed to drop him in the first round, I’ve never had that before and then I got dropped too, I haven’t had that either.

“I learned a lot from that fight. It was the first time I dropped someone and the first time I’d been dropped so that made me change little things in training.

“I’m looking forward to this year, so far it has been great and it’s gone so quickly. It feels like I have never been out of camp.

“I prefer to be boxing regularly and carry on improving.”
