PHIL Brown’s vision to secure Swindon Town promotion back into League One is what attracted new recruit Toumani Diagouraga to sign up for his second spell at the County Ground.

Diagouraga, 31, was confirmed as Brown’s seventh off-season capture on Wednesday night after making the switch from Fleetwood Town on a free transfer.

The Frenchman is set for his second stint in Wiltshire after making eight appearances while on loan under then-Town boss Iffy Onuora in 2006.

After meeting with Brown on Sunday, Diagouraga had no hesitation with regards to where he would be spending the 2018-19 season – admitting everything suited his requirements.

He told the club's official website: “I’m very happy, I met the manager on Sunday and everything went from there.

“The manager and the club were the main reasons why I was attracted to sign. I’ve played here before when I was younger, everything fit the right bill.

“That’s one of the reasons why I agreed to join the club, because I want to get back to League One as soon as possible.”

The experienced midfielder is expected to play in the holding number four position after Brown concluded that both James Dunne and Martin Smith did not naturally suit the position.

With more than 450 Football League appearances to his name, Diagouraga is also hopeful of passing on pockets of knowledge to some of Town’s younger players during his time at the County Ground.

And with Town set to face Portsmouth in a pre-season friendly at SN1 on Saturday, Diagouraga is hopeful of bagging some minutes ahead of the club’s first competitive fixture in their League Two opener against Macclesfield Town on Saturday, August 4.

“I’m here to help everyone to try and be successful, if I can help the younger players then that’s a bonus,” he said.

“I’d like to think I’m quite comfortable on the ball and work hard for the team.

“I’m excited for the Portsmouth game.”
