SWINDON St George head coach Ben Whincup believes rounding off their South West League West of England Super Fives pool programme with victory on Saturday could be key to their hopes of overall glory.

A win for St George in their fourth and final group game against All Golds on Saturday will guarantee them a top-two finish and a home semi-final – an advantage that could well pay dividends in the long run.

Swindon currently sit second in the standings after two wins from their opening three games, although they face a stiff challenge to make sure of a high pool finish this weekend as All Golds are the only team to boast a 100 per cent record.

“We want another good win,” said Whincup, ahead of the match at Supermarine RFC (2.30pm).

“We want to beat everyone because we want to get that home semi-final because we know that could make a massive difference.

“Things are going really well for us. The boys are really enjoying their rugby at the moment, which is pleasing to see, and I think that is what has led to these strong results of late.

“We want to go into those semi-finals with momentum and confidence.”

Swindon have recovered well from a slow start to their Super Fives programme, having been thumped 62-6 on home turf by Reading Raiders four weeks ago.

After a week off to lick their wounds, St George have since responded with back-to-back away wins over Somerset Vikings and Oxford Cavaliers, so are well placed to try to continue that good form against All Golds.

“We have turned a massive corner since that Reading match,” said Whincup.

“We have had a lot of selection issues to do with injuries this season but people are coming back to fitness and the squad is in a really good place at the moment.”
