SWINDON St George head coach Ben Whincup hopes to thrive under the underdogs tag as his side goes for West of England Super Fives glory in the South West League on Saturday.

St George travel to Cheltenham for the final this afternoon to take on an All Golds side who have swept aside all before them in the competition so far.

All Golds were the only team to win more than two of their four group games, coming through the pool stage with a 100 per cent record, and followed that up with an emphatic 32-point triumph over Somerset Vikings in the semis.

Swindon were equally impressive in their last-four encounter though, trouncing Reading Raiders 30-8 last weekend, and Whincup says they should head to the final with nothing to fear.

All Golds emerged as 44-20 winners the last time the two sides met in the final round of pool games a fortnight ago, but the St George coach is confident his troops have what it takes to make up that deficit.

Whincup said: "We played well in that match and we weren’t really out of the game until the last 15 minutes.

"We know we are in for a tough game and All Golds are the best team in the competition – they have won every game they have played this season.

"We will be massive underdogs and they will be heavy favourites. But they have got players who have played games professionally, so all the expectation is on them.

"I don’t mind going in as the underdogs, I think it will suit us. You have to be in it to have a chance of winning it – anything can happen on the day. We are looking forward to it.

"It is a third final in as many years for us and hopefully we can finish the job off.

"Eight or nine of our squad that played in last season’s Grand Final will be involved again and we need to try to use that experience to our advantage."

For Whincup, today's match marks his last at them helm at St George after three years at the club and the head coach hopes his troops can mark it in fitting fashion for what has been an era of success for the Supermarine-based outfit.

"This will be my final game, so it is not a bad stage to finish off on," said Whincup.

"It’s been a fantastic three years and we have been in the Grand Final every season I have been in charge. Hopefully we can finish with one more win."
