TRAINER Paddy Fitzpatrick says Luke ‘The Duke’ Watkins has ‘no problem’ facing Commonwealth title mandatory Wadi Camacho but stated the 33-year-old is not at the forefront of their plans.

Swindon's Watkins signed a two-fight deal with Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn when he agreed to take on Lawrence Okolie in early June.

Fitzpatrick says his man refuses to be drawn into speculation and insists the cruiserweight's primary focus remains on preparing for the second fight of that deal, which is expected to take place in October at the latest.

The former New College student lost the belt following his defeat to Okolie at York Hall, the defeat being a first for Watkins, who is now back in training ahead of his next bout later this year.

Okolie has since vacated the Commonwealth strap as he bids to dethrone Matty Askin as British champion on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight clash with Alexander Povetkin next month.

Fellow cruiserweight Camacho has been made mandatory for the Commonwealth title and some have touted for a clash between him and Watkins after the London fighter pursued the Swindon man earlier this year.

Fitzpatrick reiterated that Watkins has a few options to consider, but claims his man would have no issues taking on Camacho should the fight present itself.

“Duke came into the gym the other day and said he’d been asked about fighting Wadi, Luke’s opinion is that he has no problem and he’ll knock him out,” he said.

“He said if I could put it on, he’d knock him out because he would love to get his Commonwealth title back.

“We have another option. You’d think that Wadi would have forgotten about Luke and that he’d be after the title.

“Because Lawrence (Okolie) beat Luke you’d think he wouldn’t be interested in Luke anymore but no, he seems to have to a problem with Luke.

“He seems to want a fight with Luke, he’s in the mandatory so could fight anyone but I think he wants Luke.

“I think that he took it to heart when Luke said that he could knock him out so obviously that didn’t sit too well with him.

“Duke is more than happy to prove he’s capable of doing that.”
