SWINDON golfing sensation Connor Hibbs showcased his growing talent at the HSBC Wee Wonders Grand Final in St Andrews where he took on the British Isles' top young golfers.

The Peatmoor Primary School pupil beat off competition from more than 3,000 competitors to qualify for the prestigious event and shot rounds of 41 and 40 over the nine-hole course to secure a third-place finish.

And Ryder Cup star Colin Montgomerie believes the six-year-old, who plays at Broome Manor Golf Club, could be a name to look out for in the future.

"One of these 72 kids here will be, I am sure, not just a champion but a Major champion and maybe that could be Connor," said Montgomerie.

"Connor played fantastically well and I'm sure his family will be very proud of him. Playing at St Andrews is an once-in-a-lifetime experience, but I am sure we will be seeing more of Connor in years to come."

Dorcan Technology College student Matthew Mumford just missed out on a podium finish after finishing fourth in the 11-12 age category.

Matthew was leading after the first day and despite missing out on the top spot, dad Mark was proud of his son's performance.

He said: "It is a real privilege to come here with Mark to the home of golf.

"There was some very tough competition here and to be shooting level par at this age is a fantastic achievement."
