LEIGH Adams is convinced he's rarely been in better shape to end his long wait for speedway's world title.
The Swindon Robins skipper opens his campaign in Slovenia tonight determined to shake off the tag of being the best current rider never to lift the ultimate prize.
Adams was third in the Krsko round last year on his way to second place overall, but insists he is better placed to make an immediate impact on this year's championship after Danish star Nicki Pedersen's runaway success last year.
"I'm very well prepared this year and, at a guess, I'd say I'm about 20 per cent better off in relation to my engines than I was at this time last season,'' said the Liddington-based Aussie.
"I'm very happy with my motors and I know their characteristics very well now.
"I've been quick right from the start of the season and that has really given me the confidence to give this world title a huge shake.
"It was the first two rounds last year that set me back and whilst I came back very strongly it was just a bit too hard to bridge the gap.
"We've done a lot of work to ensure the same thing doesn't happen this time and while I know I don't have to win the opening two rounds to win the title, I need to be in the thick of it.
"I'm feeling very fit and strong and have 100 per cent confidence in my bikes and team. We are all happy and gunning for the same thing, and a happy team is a winning team as far as I'm concerned."
