YOUTH team star Tom Evans has signed his first professional contract with Swindon Town, which will keep him at the County Ground until the end of the 2008/9 season.

Evans, who featured in Town's 1-0 loss to Salisbury City in the final of the Wilts Premier Shield last night, has been given another year to prove himself after an injury-plagued campaign.

The Welsh youth international joins the nine other youth teamers who were offered extended County Ground deals in February as boss Maurice Malpas looks to build for the future.

Malpas said: "Tom was highly rated before his injury and I feel I owe him some loyalty. It is a big season for him next season."

It,s one thing signing young players for the future as long as we don't become another Crewe Alex, keeping them just long enough to fatten them up for market. If the board wants us to show faith and purchase 6000 season tickets let's hope they're going to show some ambition in the transfer market this summer.
