CYCLE SPEEDWAY: Swindon show skills without engines

Swindon Cycle Speedway club are emulating their speedway counterparts after clinching a fourth straight win of the season over Southampton at the Oasis Leisure Centre.

Swindon lead the South West Division One table and boast a 100 per cent record after their 88-80 triumph - despite missing key riders.

They called up the services of Richard Holloway, son of Reading Speedway co-promoter and Swindon legend Malcolm, who had not ridden for more than 13 years, and he scored 10 points, despite a nasty fall in his final ride.

Southampton arrived without a full side, but still featured two former senior British champions in brothers Colin and Gavin Wheeler, alongside highly-rated former British under 16 champion Tom Collins.

He managed a faultless 24-point maximum while Gavin Wheeler was outpaced once by Swindon's top scorer Daniel Harper, who mustered a excellent paid 18.

There was excellent back-up from Shaun Rudman and James Bailey, who combined for paid 32.

Scores Swindon: Roberts Harper 7+1, Pete Bradford 11+1, Richard Holloway 10, Dan Harper 15+3, Josh Sumbler 4, Shaun Rudman 16, James Bailey 15+1, Paul Matthews 10+1.

Southampton: John Vernam 10, Dave Newnam 9, Colin Wheeler 15+1, Gavin Wheeler 22+1, Tom Collins 24.
