BREAKING NEWS: A Sweet deal for Robins

SWINDON Robins have today announced the signing of highly-rated Australian youngster Richard Sweetman.

After much speculation, the 17-year-old is scheduled to arrive in Britain early next month and will spend the remainder of 2008 on loan at a Premier league club.

Born in Maitland ,New South Wales, Sweetman began his career n junior speedway aged 11.

He has enjoyed plenty of success in his fledgling career to date, including victories in the 2007 Australian long track championship and the 2007 New South Wales Under 21championship.

Sweetman was also selected as first reserve for this year's five-round Australian Speedway Championship, but was forced to withdraw after suffering a back injury during the third round in Mt Gambier.

Sweetman was the target of many British clubs and Swindon team manager Alun Rossiter is thrilled to have captured the Australian's signature.

He said: "This signing continues our policy of recruiting talented young riders as we keep one eye firmly fixed on the future.

"Our hard work over the past few seasons now means we have established ourselves as a desirable club for riders looking to establish their careers.

"We envisage Richard playing a big part in our future and are thoroughly excited about welcoming him to Britain.

"Australian speedway commissioner Rod Colquhon was instrumental in the completion of this signing; Swindon was always Richard's club of choice and Rod was only too willing to assist where needed.

"We must thank Rod for all his hard work in ensuring the process was wholly professional throughout."
