Getting back on the Wright track

JAMES Wright is determined to make the most of his time in the Robins reserve berth but insists his cull from the main body of the team is only a temporary one.

The Stockport-born rider has scored paid 33 points in the three meetings since his switch to number seven and Swindon will be looking for more of the same when the tapes go up at Poole tonight.

Wimborne Road has not been a happy hunting ground for Robins so far this season, with heavy defeats in the Elite League and Craven Shield still fresh in the memory.

But after his season-high paid 13 in last Saturday's 50-43 defeat at Eastbourne, Wright, pictured in action, is confident the Knockout Cup will bring a change in fortunes for his side.

He said: "I'm making the most of it while I'm at reserve, scoring some vital points and making some vital rides.

"We didn't get too hammered at Eastbourne, it was just one of those things.

"It's a very tough track to go to, but I had best meeting of the year and to score paid 13 was unbelievable.

"I've scored lots of points at reserve so far and I'm really enjoying myself. I'm going to move up pretty soon so I will just make the most of it.

"I want to carry that on once I move up and score the points consistently again."

While all eyes were on new recruit Manuel Hauzinger last Thursday, Wright was quietly going about his business compiling another impressive haul of paid 10.

But despite outscoring the Austrian on the night, Wright could not help but be impressed by Hauzinger's contribution.

He said: "I was really surprised because I have seen him in the Premier League and it was never really any better than a second string.

"But he's come out and done really well, if he keeps that up we will be in good shape.

"That's what you need, two reserves scoring and it takes a lot of pressure off the rest of the team. We won comfortably against Eastbourne in the end and that's what we need to keep doing."

With Poole having re-gained top spot in the league standings after their slender two point victory at Wolverhampton on Monday night, this week's Knockout Cup encounter brings together the top two sides in British speedway.

Both teams are expected to be a full strength for the meetings with Poole skipper Bjarne Pedersen now fully back into the racing routine after recovering from the wrist injury that sidelined him for a four-week period.
