SPEEDWAY: Swindon sweet on Richard's loan move

ROBINS' teenage rider Richard Sweetman has joined the Isle of Wight on loan, writes ANTHONY MARSHALL.

The 17-year-old has been drafted into the Premier League side as a replacement for fellow Swindon asset Cory Gathercole, who is recovering from a broken hand.

After officially joining the Robins at the end of May, Sweetman only arrived in Wiltshire last week, and is expected to make his British debut on Tuesday when the Isle of Wight host Berwick at the Smallbrook stadium.

The Islanders have a rich tradition of nurturing young Australian riders, and have been instrumental in launching the careers of Chris Holder, Adam Shields and Jason Doyle in recent years.

Robins boss Alun Rossiter believes the temporary switch to the Premier League will help Sweetman in the long run.

He said: "Some people have asked why we haven't replaced Seb Alden with Richard.

"However, to chuck him in the Elite League could destroy the confidence he brings with him.

"At 17, he is a breathtaking talent who needs to be nurtured.

"I expect Richard to settle well at the Isle of Wight and we'll be monitoring his progress closely."

Isle of Wight co-promoter Dave Pavitt added: "Like many other promoters, we have been monitoring Richard's progress closely for some time.

"When it became apparent that Cory's injury was going to keep him out for a month or so we quickly put in motion moves to sign him as his temporary replacement.

"This really is an ideal opportunity for us to take a good look at a young rider who is so highly rated, and for Richard himself to not only get accustomed to British conditions but to show everyone what he can do."
