SWINDON school pupils celebrated National School Sport Week with a series of activities around the town last week.

The second annual event saw youngsters dedicating the week to getting physically active with the help of the Swindon School Sport Partnership programme.

Pupils from Lawn, Lainesmead, Toothill, Tregoze, Oaktree and King William Street schools took part in two fundamentals festivals for youngsters between the aged of five and seven.

Held at New College, a series of fun challenges around agility, balance and co-ordination were held with the schools each representing a country that they had learned about in the build up to the festiva.

Secondary school youngsters took part in an ultimate frisbee competition and golf day at Broome Manor.

The ultimate frisbee competition, a fast growing school sport, was won by Bradon Forest (Years 9/10) and Isambard (Years 7/8).

The golf day included coaching from the professionals at Broome Manor followed by a competition in the afternoon won by Commonweal. Other schools participating included Greendown and Churchfields.

A primary school multisport festival, featuring more than 500 Year 3-6 pupils was one of the centrepieces of the week’s activities.

Multiskills, tri-golf and a cultural dance festival were among the activities Sports leaders from Greendown School were on hand to deliver to the visiting primary schools which included King William Street, South Marston, Westrop, Toothill, Chiseldon, Colebrook Junior, Lainesmead, Swindon Academy, Shaw Ridge, Tregoze, Oliver Tomkins Juniors and Oaktree.

The Swindon Stars – a secondary event designed to challenge the best of Swindon’s secondary pupils - ended the week.

The day included a series of stations that tested all aspects of sports performance – co-ordination, balance, athletic ability, strength and problem solving.

Dorcan won the Year 7/8 competition with Churchfields winning the Fair Play award.

In the year 9/10 event, Commonweal took the title with Swindon Academy scooping the Fair Play award.

Other events held included an orienteering fetsival at Coate Water.
