DANNY Wilson was full of praise for Jonathan Douglas’ moment of magic as Town beat Luton 1-0 in their latest pre-season friendly last night.

The midfielder grabbed the only goal of the game at Kenilworth Road midway through the second half as he rounded off a fine move involving Jon-Paul McGovern and Lloyd Macklin with a clinical finish.

And the boss believes it is a glimpse of what his Swindon side will be capable of this season in League One.

“It was excellent, wasn’t it?” said Wilson.

“The build-up play was terrific and that little bit of interchange between Dougie and Lloyd on the edge of the box completely flummoxed them.

“It left him with a go on goal and it was a very sweet finish.

“If we can do that and play that way then we will cause teams a few problems.’’ Luton created the first chance on three minutes when Lescinel Jean-Francois allowed a high ball to bounce around 20 yards out.

Tom Craddock was on to it in a flash and, having turned back inside onto his left foot, forced David Lucas to tip the resulting effort over the bar.

After Billy Paynter had headed a Jon-Paul McGovern cross inches wide at the other end, Craddock was once again tormenting the Swindon defence in the 18th minute.

The frontman latched on to a loose ball following Andy Burgess’ blocked shot but Lucas was equal to his low effort.

It took half an hour for Town to test home keeper Mark Tyler - with Alan O’Brien racing on to Callum Kennedy’s knock down the left and firing towards the near post - but the stopper got down well to smother it.

With the half coming to a close the visitors grew as an attacking force and McGovern forced Tyler into another save after Luton failed to clear a corner.

The Hatters had the ball in the back of the net right on the stroke of half-time through Craddock’s neat chip.

But the linesman’s flag was already raised with the striker in an offside position.

Luton came sharply out of the traps in the second period and Lucas did well to hold Burgess’ rising snap-shot from 20 yards after 49 minutes.

In the 57th minute Lloyd Macklin picked up on the ball in the middle of the park, strode forward and fired a low, right-footed effort towards the far post which was inches the wrong side of the upright.

Swindon broke the deadlock a minute later courtesy of the best move of the game and a piece of superb one-touch football.

McGovern knocked the ball inside to Douglas with the outside of his foot, and from there the midfield man struck it forward to Macklin just inside the box.

Macklin backheeled into the path of Douglas, who had continued his run, and from there he drove the ball into the bottom corner.

Luton almost replied immediately when Burgess let fly with another effort, but Lucas continued to frustrate the home side by turning it behind for a corner.

Town substitute Jerel Ifil nearly put through his own net in the 85th minute as he scuffed a deflected cross goalwards, but thankfully for him it ended up out for a corner rather than an embarrassing equaliser.

Wilson said: “It was another good workout against a very good Luton side.

“There was nothing really much in the game. They had a few chances, we had some good chances and there was a lot of endeavour in and around the midfield.

“It’s early days, but all you can do is try and beat what’s put in front of you and we’ve done that.”
